Poker is a card game where the aim is to form a winning hand based on rank, in order to win the pot at the end of each betting round. The players put an initial amount of money into the pot (amount varies by game but our games are a nickel) and then the cards are dealt. Each time betting gets around to you, you can choose to fold, raise or call. If you have a strong hand, it is often best to raise as this will build the pot and potentially chase off others who are waiting for a better hand.
Top players fast-play their hands, as this maximises the amount of money they can win from a given hand. This involves calling a lot of bets, and also bluffing at times. If you have a weaker hand, it is usually best to fold as this will prevent your opponents from chasing you down the river.
The main objective of any player should be to minimize the amount of risk involved in a hand, and this can be done by playing your position intelligently. It is important to note that you cannot see your opponent’s cards, so every action you take gives information away about the strength of your hand. It is also important to understand ranges as this will allow you to work out what the other player could have and therefore increase your chances of winning.
