The first step is to shuffle the cards and cut them several times, if you can. Usually the player clockwise to you will be the dealer, but this can be changed if there is a tie. Before the first deal, each player should place their bets in the pot, which is an aggregate of all of the individual players’ bets. The player with the highest hand wins the pot of chips.
Once the players have received their 2 personal cards there will be a round of betting, which is started by mandatory bets called blinds put into the pot by the players to the left of the dealer. After this a 3rd card is dealt face up to the table, called the flop.
After the flop another betting round is done and then 1 more card is dealt face up, called the turn. After this a final betting round is done and then the 5th card is revealed, called the river. A player with the best poker hand of 5 cards wins the pot.
Bluffing is an integral part of poker, but as a beginner you should avoid bluffing too much and focus on learning relative hand strength. It’s also a good idea to watch experienced players and see how they play in certain situations to build your instincts.
