When you play the lottery, you’re hoping to win big and turn your dreams into reality. Whether you want to buy your luxury dream home world, take a trip around the globe or close all your debts, winning a jackpot can be a life-changing event for anyone. The key is to know how to play wisely. Richard Lustig has some expert tips for maximizing your chances of winning the lotto.

Purchasing more tickets will slightly improve your odds of winning, but don’t go crazy and spend more than you can afford to lose. It’s also recommended to choose numbers that aren’t close together, because others might be choosing those same numbers. Additionally, try playing a smaller game with less numbers, like a state pick-3. Then you won’t have as many options, and your chance of selecting a winning sequence will increase.

Since their introduction, state lotteries have followed remarkably similar paths. In virtually every case, the state legislated a monopoly for itself; established a public corporation or agency to run the lottery (as opposed to licensing private firms in return for a share of proceeds); began operations with a modest number of relatively simple games; and then, because of pressure for additional revenues, progressively expanded the scope and complexity of the lotteries. What’s more, the objective fiscal conditions of a state do not seem to have much influence on whether it adopts a lottery. Instead, the decisions to introduce a lottery appear to be largely driven by politics and public opinion.
